Appendix C: Coverage and Confidence Notes

This appendix documents the verification status of the content in this textbook.

Sources

  1. Al-Shāṭibiyyah matn — the full 1,173-line poem, decoded line by line. This is the PRIMARY source for all rules.
  2. Slide 04 — "Ten Recitations of the Quran: History and Rules" — covers Ibn Kathīr (al-Bazzī and Qunbul) comprehensively.
  3. Slide 05 — "Recitation of Shuʿbah from ʿĀṣim" — covers Shuʿbah's differences from Ḥafṣ comprehensively.

Confidence Tiers

Tier 1: Confirmed (Highest Confidence)

Rules verified by both the matn AND a slide deck: - Ibn Kathīr (both rāwīs): Chapters 8–11 - Zero imālah, qaṣr in munfaṣil, mīm al-jamʿ ṣilah, hāʾ ṣilah, tashīl of two hamzahs, tāʾ/hāʾ stopping, al-Bazzī's takbīr, Qunbul's three-option hamzah and sīn for ṣād - Shuʿbah: Chapter 22 - Fixed 4 munfaṣil, imālah word list, hamzah replacements, istifhām locations, three idghām cases, yāʾ al-iḍāfah per-verse locations

Tier 2: Verified from Matn (High Confidence)

Rules decoded directly from the Shāṭibiyyah with clear rumūz: - Basmalah rules for all reciters (lines 100–107) - Ḥafṣ's four saktāt (lines 830–831) - Ḥafṣ's single imālah Q11:41 (farsh) - النبيء with hamzah for Nāfiʿ (lines 458–459) - Q2:37 reversed iʿrāb for Ibn Kathīr (line 452) - Q2:36 فَأَزَالَهُمَا for Ḥamzah (line 451) - Lām of divine name rules (lines 262–265) - Takbīr (lines 1121–1133) - Many individual farsh readings where rumūz decoding is straightforward

Tier 3: Matn Summary (Moderate Confidence)

Rules from the matn decode at summary level — the general principle is clear but specific per-reciter word lists or verse-level assignments may have errors: - Madd durations for non-slide-backed reciters - Hamzah rules for Nāfiʿ, Abū ʿAmr (general approach known, specific positions awaiting confirmation) - Waqf rules (general principles, specific word lists awaiting confirmation) - Rāʾ tafkhīm/tarqīq rules (general framework, disputed words awaiting confirmation) - Yāʾāt al-zawāʾid (general framework, per-verse lists awaiting confirmation) - Most farsh readings for non-slide-backed reciters

Tier 4: Quarantined (Use with Caution)

Areas explicitly flagged as needing scholar verification: - Imālah detail (matn lines 294–338) — the specific word lists and per-reciter assignments for Ḥamzah, al-Kisāʾī, Abū ʿAmr, Warsh, Ibn ʿĀmir - Yāʾ al-iḍāfah (matn lines 388–419) — "one of the sections most prone to error" per the Phase 1 health assessment - Ḥamzah's waqf hamzah rules (matn lines 239–254) — complex system, decoded at summary level only - Complex compound rumūz — some matn lines with multiple overlapping rumūz where the exact per-reciter assignment is ambiguous

What Is NOT in This Textbook

  • Readings from outside the Shāṭibiyyah (e.g., Warsh via ṭuruq other than al-Azraq, the three additional readings from al-Durrah)
  • Detailed tajwīd instruction (assumed knowledge from Ḥafṣ training)
  • The full matn decode (available in the /decoded/ directory)
  • Personal interpretation or preference among variant readings

For authoritative verification beyond this textbook: - سِرَاجُ القَارِئ (Sirāj al-Qāriʾ) by Ibn al-Qāṣiḥ — the standard commentary on the Shāṭibiyyah - فَتْحُ الوَصِيد (Fatḥ al-Waṣīd) by al-Sakhāwī — another major commentary - النَّشْر فِي القِرَاءَاتِ العَشْر (al-Nashr fī al-Qirāʾāt al-ʿAshr) by Ibn al-Jazarī — the comprehensive reference - غَيْثُ النَّفْع (Ghayth al-Nafʿ) by al-Ṣafāqusī — practical guide for the seven readings
